Calgary Community Profile: Parkdale
Parkdale is a gem of a community! It is a beautiful mix of 1950’s bungalows and traditional and contemporary new infills that compliment each other very well. Builders have been very careful to keep the ultra modern style to a minimum here while still injecting an abundance of character.

Parkdale, Calgary: Who should live here?
I would recommend Parkdale to those who want the inner city charm without the congestion of traffic in the community. If proximity to the water is on your wish list, Parkdale is an excellent choice. It is a great pick for developers wanting to do luxury single family homes, side by sides or upscale townhomes.
Parkdale, Calgary: Location
The obvious reason that Parkdale has won my heart is it’s location. The river is at your doorstep and the commute to the core is just a few minutes long. It is far enough away from downtown that you can still find street parking (a trouble of some inner city communities) but close enough that you can hop on the river paths and jog or bike to Eau Claire. The community sits just below the foothills hospital which allows it to command great rental prices as it draws in several doctors and nurses.
Parkdale, Calgary Price Range: condos from mid 300’s to the 600’s, attached and detached homes from the 500’s to over 1,000,000. There are very few condo buildings in the community compared to other inner city locations so they do come at a premium price point.

Parkdale, Calgary: Recreation Facilities
The other area where Parkdale ranks high is it’s access to amazing outdoor recreational activities. The community is within walking distance to one of my favorite trails in Calgary, the Douglas Fir Trail. If you haven’t heard of the Douglas Fir Trail don’t be surprised, most haven’t. It is on the south side of the river and is a few kilometers of hiking trails through the trees that is easily found on the large maps in the park. I have been on it in all seasons and love it most in late spring when it is not too muddy, the streams are running, and everything is fresh and green. It is mostly stairs as it is up the hillside so you will often find athletes training on them or local residents walking their dogs. You also have access to the river pathways which are extensive and can take you on quite a journey, either to Eau Claire heading east or to the Bowness parks heading west. There are public tennis courts in the neighboring community of Pt Mackay and an outdoor skating rink in the winter.
Parkdale, Calgary: Downside
The downside to the community is the busy Parkdale Blvd. It is a major route to downtown and is quite busy. Some people love that they have a direct route but in my opinion it does take away from the peacefulness of the community.
Parkdale, Calgary: Restaurants
There are some great eateries in Parkdale that have a cult-like following. Lik’s is one of those. It still shocks me to drive by Lik’s in the summertime and see a line up out the door and down the block. The Lazy Loaf and Kettle also has a great following; their breakfast is delicious! What a great Sunday morning to walk to Lazy Loaf for brunch then stroll along the river. Avatara serves my favorite take out pizza in the city…and is conveniently right beside Lik’s for dessert.
Parkdale, Calgary: History
Even though the City of Calgary annexed the area in 1910, it was not developed until 1948. However, there is a house dating back to 1910 situated in Parkdale, below the escarpment of St. Andrews Heights. The house belonged to Ezra Riley, son of Thomas Riley who was a successful pioneer rancher owning a large area of land along the north escarpment of the Bow River Valley. The Riley House is an excellent example of a substantial ranch farmhouse. It was originally located along Crowchild Trail in West Hillhurst, but it was recently moved to its present Parkdale location. Most of the community consists of low density residential dwellings. In addition, Foothills Hospital is situated on the hill just north of the neighborhood. Parkdale has good access to Downtown, via Parkdale Boulevard, and to the pathway.
